Trafford otvorili v roku 1910, hneď sa naň nasťahoval Manchester United
zo starého stánku Bank Street. Štadión dostavali v roku 1909 za vtedy

V 70tych rokoch sa stal starý trafford prvým štadiónom, ktorý bol oplotený kvôli vandalom.
Po pohrome v Hillsborough požadoval Taylor Report na začiatku 90tych
rokov aby všetky špičkové tímy v Anglicku mali miesta len na sedenie.

Nasledovali prestavby štadióna v rokoch 1995-96 kedy boli pridané tri
poschodia na North Stand čo ju zdvyhlo o vyše 200 stôp. Navyše vlastní
najväčšiu samonostnú strechu v Európe. Tiež bolo pridané múzeum,
miestnosť na trofeje, reštaurácia Red Cafe a samozrejme dva pási VIP
lóží.
Ďalšia prestavba prišla v roku 2000, keď bola zvýšená kapacita štadiónu
na 68 174 sediacich divákov. Veľký moment nastal v roku 2003 pri finále
ligy majstrov medzi Milánom a juventusom, keď tento prestížny zápas
hostil práve Old Trafford.
Budúce plány na zdvihnutie kapacity nad 75 000 miest sú v plnom prúde. Výstavba sa začne koncom tejto sezóny a hotová bude počas sezóny 2006/2007.

The North Stand - Severní sektor Old Trafford byl roku 1996 přestavěn a zvětšen na 25 tisíc míst. Je to obrovský trojpodlažní konstrukce a k její stavbě bylo použito 4000 tun železa a 4500 tun betonu. Tribuna měří 60 m a má 4 věže a největší svého druhu na světě střechu. Masivní věže vyčnívající nad hřiště mají za cíl zastrašit a zneklidnit protivníka. Při stavbě střechy byl použit 58 metrů dlouhý podpůrný sloup. Tribuna má dvě řady VIP loží.

Je vybaven elektronickými panely u každého sedadla. Na South Stand se

který svírají sedadla je trochu jiný, než na zbytku stadiónu, a proto

prvních 20 řad je umístěných níže, než povrch ulice, na které OT sídlí.
Z televizních záběrů je zřídkakdy vidět jižní sektory, protože je tam
mnoho jeřábů a konstrukcí s kamerami. Tunel pro hráče byl kdysi
uprostřed stadionu, v roce 1993 však byl přesunut do rohu mezi jižním a
západním sektorem. Původní tunel ale zůstal a je otvírán příležitostně,
hlavně během exkurzí.
The East Stand - Východní sektor, dříve znám
jako Scoreboard End, kvůli velké tabuli, která zde byla až do konce 60´
let, tu pak vyměnili za elektronickou. Posledně ji vyměnili za dvě
velice moderní na rozích North Stand. Tribuna je určena pro fanoušky
United, nachází se tam však i část pro fanoušky hostů a pro tělesně
postižené. Fanoušci hostů mají vždy zaručených 3800 míst. Na evropské
poháry je to vždy o 3 tisíce víc. Byl to poslední sektor, kde byly k
dispozici místa na stání. V roce 1993 však kvůli bezpečnosti však byla
všechna místa na stání nahrazena sedícími. V důsledku přestavby
stadiónu v roce 2000 bylo přidáno druhé podlaží. Konstrukce zevnitř
tribuny je skleněná, vypadá jako moderní kancelářské budovy v hlavních
městech. Před ní stojí socha Sira Matta Busbyho, památní tabule a
slavné hodiny, které připomínají smutnou mnichovskou tragédii z
